Rachel Maddow has the right stuff*...
for MSNBC.

As Olbermann's audience grew to rival, though not quite equal, that of longtime ratings king Bill O'Reilly, MSNBC gained an unwanted reputation as an emergent liberal version of Fox News--a view that became more prevalent after Maddow's show was announced.

Not exactly "Fair and Balanced".

Meanwhile Republican and former Congressman Joe Scarborough has a three-hour program every morning--more airtime than Maddow and Olbermann have combined. While MSNBC is experimenting with a block of liberal programming, as a network that shares offices with NBC News, it can't afford to be seen as having an ideological bias. The network recently bowed to conservative critics by moving Matthews and Olbermann, both seen as sympathetic to Barack Obama, out of the anchor chairs for live political events.

The only reason MSNBC should have resisted "conservative critics" is if they wanted to be the perfect counter-balance to FOX NEWS. If only they could find anchors without opinions or curiosity or personality, it might be a reasonable excuse. But I find it part of the "vast Right-wing conspiracy" of "do as I say, not as I do". Or part of their whiner nature, could it be "The squeaky wheel gets the oil"? No wonder the Straight Talk Express seems to have a rattle and need a pacifier.**

[Update: I want to caution against too much ridicule of the way Governor Palin relates to foreign policy and economic issues. She is does a pretty good job of spinning up the trickle down. Meaning she is describing them in ways that obscure under sensible principles policies that will not achieve them. In other words she does a brilliant job of defending policies which are indefensible, yet fits the old pattern of what they think will work. But then I could just be too easy on her, or sexist, in an affirmative action sort of way.]

Watershed moment? NBC questions.

Irony noted: McCain has to explain context of Obama remark, already explained by Obama. Obama has to explain the remark, even as McCain Miss-took it, on Letterman. If it was about Palin, then she would be the lipstick, so it was really about the lipstick not the pig, which makes McCain calling Palin the pig. (Literally hiding behind more than just a skirt, but a Miss used aphorism.)

Has Obama "unleashed" 527's? I don't understand how they work. But liberal groups better not be using the tactics that McCain and his crowd are using.

This movie is worth watching again: The Olbermann piece, not the President's speech.

I would like to add to the script though:

Not only was the President's account of the war on terror fanciful, and 0 for 4 in his claims; but there is even less proof that these have anything to do with him and things having changed since September 11th, 2001 or whether there would even be that tragedy if such similar episodes had been followed. Meaning that there is not only little demonstration that such recent "terrorist acts" were very far along, but that his signing statements and the patriot act were at all necessary to prevent them or whether existing laws were the weakness before September 11th.

Watch your screen for Jaws III or is it the Screams.

No Resemblance?

The resemblance I saw was to Keith Olbermann, in the fire that Barack Obama had in his speech. Ironically, Olbermann used those words to refer to an AP report on the speech.

In my opinion: The only thing missing was a "Bring him on!" to McCain, but he did challenge McCain to debate who has the temperment to be commander-in-chief.

I could not find the AP source, nor my own reference to temperment; no matter, but I will try to narrow the focus later.

Originally speechless or at least searching for words, "Fantastic speech" is what I should say. No resemblance to McCain, great resemlance to greatness.

My reason for bumping up, the extended portion of FAUX NEWS, is Rachel Maddow and the Constitution, namely the 1st Amendment,
regarding the free press, not my extended references in this blog.
NOT TO MENTION FINALLY THE BILL IS BLOOMIN' DONE>

I propose that Republicans are furthering their childish rhetoric to get attention as they are really running from a free press, in the likes of MSNBC. Not to mention the questions that they would have to face in the likes of Ed Schultz or Keith Olbermann(and Lawrence O'Donnell*). Dylan Ratigan and Chris Matthews are no slouches, but the latter is a bit too sophisticated for my taste at times.

I can understand now why Scott Brown in Massachusetts is running against Rachel Maddow since he actually thinks she is campaigning against him, when it is really he who is running on running from her.

BTW: FOX's whole existence was built on the myth of the liberal media, aka The Mainstream Media, and it is a shame that it justifies MSNBC's approach or calling it out and calling on the country to wake-up and behave. And Lawrence, in seque[oops/Segue] to Rachel: not today, but between you and I, yes we did![oops and bold updated 3-26-10]

Satire is not a two way street.

That is the proposal.  That it is unlikely to be possible for there to be equivalence on the right and left.  Now that is an awkward statement or phrasing of the* obvious. 

There is difficulty comparing anything at opposite ends of the political spectrum, let alone** middles.  The Olbermann/Beck comparison is along the lines of journalism more than parody.  Limbaugh along the lines of Colbert more than Olbermann.  It may be along the lines of who is pulling whose leg for whom.  That's the gravitas!

To paraphrase the difficulty for which there is more work needed, parody may be more difficult for those in power. But this may confuse parody with satire, or either with having a point, confounded by the(~)irony of being direct about the point in a world of hypocrisy.

It is all political.

The FISA deal is not as bad as it could be.

I have not dug into the roots too deep, but if there is FISA review for programs, it is a new leaf on a branch. But as far as the immunity go, the three branches of government, are all unprecedentedly political.

Immunity may be retroactive, but review and accountability are still unprecedented.
It is not the corporations that we need to worry about prosecuting in these cases, it is their cooperation. As the tree branches grow, things change, and retro-activity could be cut off or not matter unprecedentedly.

My comment there:

Not being a regular consumer of his work, I did not have him on a pedestal, but given the nature of the business he was probably the best they could afford. And given the nature of the world, even harder to find one without more of an edge. Maybe as the comments on Kiley have shown.

My suggestion to MSNBC is to fill several pairs of shoes in memory of Russert's work. Not as in trying to fill his shoes, but to uphold his several jobs. It will still be difficult. [Maybe David Bender if not Rachel Maddow could fill one or more of those pairs, but not necessarily that they or GE* would want them to fit.]

I hope to be back to these links, but wish that they did not tie in so well, that more will be following. But I will summarize my feeling that McCain may be just a place holder in a strategy where there is too much to loose not to give it more than he's got, and that plays into the way I see them always playing it.

Meanwhile Obama has "flip-flopped"[**] on the Public Campaign Finance System but faces it in a more honest a principled manner than the media can follow or wishes to follow. While McCain may just be a distraction for a sleeper candidate, they cannot come up with one that should not be asked what he or she would do about holding history accountable.

* GE profits are a picture that may not fit full disclosure journalism, economics or environment, but then I acknowledge I don't fit or have the full picture either. Meaning I have taken digs at them, and it does not mean that profits are above principles or question, but that it is another story.

** The Catch-22 for them not us, but we*** can't help it. "Flip-flop" is a charge that was created by those that fear nuance or the work required to do their jobs or an attempt to do too many jobs or diminish those that see your own flip-flops, which maybe is all they can see, since this has created a loop. Not that I want to go there, but that may be one of the reasons we are here, with McCain a candidate, not his record, but the difficulty in facing it all, and the actions/reactions that brings.]]

The Senator makes some very good points even though his list is not fair and balanced on the face of it.
